Bankers kill bling

Finally, the august Wall Street Journal is delivering the sort of focused, high-value content its hip-hop-obsessed, bling-chasing readers have been clamoring for. A real laugher on A-1 today examines how the recession “is cramping the style of hip-hop artists and wannabes — many of whom are finding it difficult to afford the diamond-encrusted pendants and heavy gold chains they have long used to project an aura of outsized wealth.”

Sure, there are some cringers (“‘bling’ is losing its ring”; “the art of ‘ice’ is being watered down”) to go along with the gems (Slick Rick’s diamond-studded eye patch, anyone?). But mostly, I think we can all empathize with the sad plight of millionaire musicians who have to go slumming on QVC for five-pound chunks of cubic zirconia to sling around their necks.

Prediction: Jay-Z will wave a wad of monopoly money in an upcoming music video.
